Estradiol Pill

What is it: The estradiol pill is FDA-approved, plant-based, bioidentical hormone treatment for the alleviation of the symptoms of menopause.

Who is it for: The FDA has approved estrogen for the treatment of vasomotor symptoms, prevention of osteoporosis, treatment of the Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause and treatment of premature menopause (menopause before age 45). Estrogen is the only medication that has been proven to relieve menopausal hot flashes, night sweats and prevent osteoporosis.

The estradiol pill, or oral bioidentical estradiol, can be used safely in most women. The estradiol pill can be taken by healthy women who do not smoke, have well controlled blood pressure, no history of heart disease or stroke, liver disease, or do not have a history of blood clots or genetic mutations that increase your risk for blood clotting.

If you are unsure which type is right for you, your menopause trained doctor will review your medical and family history and can help you decide. The decision to use one type over the other can be based on cost, ease of use and personal preference.

Women who have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, active liver disease, a personal history of heart attack or stroke, or a history of estrogen dependent cancers, such as breast or uterine cancer, may not be candidates for estrogen therapy. Please note that a family history of any of these conditions is not a contraindication to menopausal hormone therapy.
