What is it: The estradiol pill is FDA-approved, plant-based, bioidentical hormone treatment for the alleviation of the symptoms of menopause.
Who is it for: The FDA has approved estrogen for the treatment of vasomotor symptoms, prevention of osteoporosis, treatment of the Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause and treatment of premature menopause (menopause before age 45). Estrogen is the only medication that has been proven to relieve menopausal hot flashes, night sweats and prevent osteoporosis.
The estradiol pill, or oral bioidentical estradiol, can be used safely in most women. The estradiol pill can be taken by healthy women who do not smoke, have well controlled blood pressure, no history of heart disease or stroke, liver disease, or do not have a history of blood clots or genetic mutations that increase your risk for blood clotting.
If you are unsure which type is right for you, your menopause trained doctor will review your medical and family history and can help you decide. The decision to use one type over the other can be based on cost, ease of use and personal preference.
Women who have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, active liver disease, a personal history of heart attack or stroke, or a history of estrogen dependent cancers, such as breast or uterine cancer, may not be candidates for estrogen therapy. Please note that a family history of any of these conditions is not a contraindication to menopausal hormone therapy.

Estradiol is the primary estrogen produced by the body and is considered to be the most powerful. - How do I know if the estradiol pill is right for me?+Your menopause-trained doctor will review your symptoms and medical history and help determine the best treatment plan for you. The estradiol pill can be taken by healthy women who do not smoke, have normal blood pressure, do not have unusual vaginal bleeding, and have no history of heart disease, liver disease, or blood clots. If you have a history of endometrial or breast cancer, are a BRCA1/2 carrier, or have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, coronary heart disease, blood clots, or stroke, oral estrogen use may not be recommended for you.
- Can I take this pill with other forms of hormone treatment?+The estradiol pill can safely be used alongside local hormonal treatments, like vaginal estradiol and M4. If you have an intact uterus, progesterone is required and will be sent to you with your estrogen. Please consult with your doctor about any other hormone treatments you are currently taking before starting treatment with Alloy.
- What is Menopausal Hormone Therapy and is it safe for me?+When you go through menopause, your body stops making estrogen, which causes symptoms like hot flashes, sleeplessness, and mood swings, and leads to conditions like osteoporosis. Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT), also known as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), is a treatment that replenishes the estrogen your body stops making, but still needs. At Alloy, all of the MHT we prescribe is bioidentical, which means it’s chemically identical to what your body was making before. For the vast majority of women, this treatment is very effective and completely safe. Your menopause-trained doctor will use your medical intake to determine the best treatment for you, and if you have any questions, you can always reach out to ask!
- What is progesterone and why is it prescribed?+Progesterone regulates the menstrual cycle and helps keep the uterine lining thin. For people with intact uteruses taking supplemental estrogen in menopause, progesterone is prescribed to protect the uterine lining.
- Is the estradiol pill eligible for HSA or FSA reimbursement?+Yes! Your consult and the medication are both eligible. The consult is considered a telehealth or telemedicine visit and is generally reimbursable. Medications prescribed by a licensed provider are eligible to be paid for or reimbursed by your HSA or FSA. Your invoice is available to download and include when you submit to your plan for reimbursement. If you require more information, please contact us at support@myalloy.com and we will assist you. Note: The IRS defines which medical expenses are eligible under an HSA or FSA and the products carried on Alloy are in compliance with these requirements. However, these plans can vary and some may not allow all eligible HSA or FSA expenses. It's important to always check with your benefits administrator to determine which expenses are eligible before you shop.
