Palpitations

Feel like your heart is beating out of your chest? Or fluttering? Or skipping beats? It can be scary. And you might not realize it’s a menopause symptom at first. But, if you’re over 40, and dealing with any of the other 34 symptoms…menopause definitely might be the reason. Palpitations often last only a few seconds and can commonly accompany hot flashes. And most of the time, it’s nothing to worry about. But, if they’re lasting longer than a few minutes and happening often, it’s definitely worth getting looked at.

Palpitations hero
54%

According to The Menopause Society, up to 54% of menopausal women experience them.

Is this normal?

As scary and uncomfortable as palpitations can be, yes, they’re normal.

What can you do?

You can practice deep breathing, and you can also try cutting back on caffeine and alcohol. Reducing your stress also might help (easier said than done, we know). You can also try Menopausal Hormone Treatment, which can help eliminate your hot flashes, night sweats, and the palpitations that go along with them.

FAQ

Why is my heart beating so fast?

Heart palpitations are one of the lesser known (and least fun) symptoms of menopause. They can happen for a variety of reasons, and it’s not always clear exactly why. They can often accompany hot flashes, and those who are under a lot of stress or have a history of depression are more likely to experience them.

Are they harmful?

They aren’t always, but they can be an indicator of other health issues. If you are experiencing heart palpitations (especially those lasting more than a few minutes) or are concerned about your cardiac health, you should talk with your doctor.

But are they normal?

Yes. And often they are not an indication that there’s something wrong. As uncomfortable (and scary!) as they can be, they are fairly common.

Is there anything I can do about it?

Yes! In addition to chatting with your doctor, you can try the following:

  • Limit your caffeine intake
  • Limit your alcohol intake
  • Reduce stress
  • Practice deep breathing and meditation

Because heart palpitations often accompany other menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and night flashes, balancing your hormones can also be a fix. Take our online assessment and learn how Menopausal Hormone Treatment can help!
